On the Shabbat of [the weekly Torah reading of] Bereshit, 29 Tishrei, on the eve of Rosh Hodesh Marheshvan, 5554 [=October 5, 1793], the third hour<br />
of the afternoon, the crown fell<br />
from the head of the leader, our teacher and master, Rabbi Dovber<br />
Birkenthal, may his light [still] shine, that is, his wife<br />
the benevolent and intelligent Mrs. Leah<br />
the daughter of the our scholarly teacher, Yehoshua, may the memory of the righteous be a blessing<br />
after she built her house through righteousness<br />
for 52 years, as a woman of valor<br />
and virtue; she opened her hand to the poor;<br />
she extended her hand to the needy, [with] enough for his needs<br />
and with different medicines she restored the lives<br />
of the sick; well-known guests<br />
always found rest for their spirit<br />
with the foods of the deputies; dining at <br />
her table were great and honored ministers;<br />
and because of her, all the members of her community were also, mainly, treated<br />
well during her lifetime of 71 years,<br />
whereupon she left us, the living; may her soul be bound in the bonds of life<br />
