The figure of a bear at the top of the monument alludes to the deceased&amp;#039;s name: Dov (Hebrew), Ber (Yiddish)— a bear. &lt;br /&gt;
The crown that the bear holds in its paws symbolizes the piety and decency of the deceased (per Pirke Avot 4:13: “Rabbi Shimon would say: There are three crowns—the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood and the crown of sovereignty—but the crown of good name surmounts them all”).&lt;br /&gt;

The aged benefactor&lt;br /&gt;
Our teacher Rabbi Dov Ber&lt;br /&gt;

Birkenthal&lt;br /&gt;
