Five were located in the ''Generalgouvernement'': Bełżec, Chełmno, Majdanek, Sobibór, and Treblinka. The sixth, Birkenau, was attached to the Auschwitz concentration camp in ''Ost-Oberschlesien'', in a part of the former Austrian Galicia that had been detached from ''Distrikt Krakau''. Jews were brought to them by rail. At Bełżec, Chełmno, Sobibór, and Treblinka nearly all were taken immediately to be killed. At Birkenau and Majdanek, which were attached to concentration and labor camps, some Jews were selected for labor service. Most Jews from ''Distrikt Krakau'' and many from ''Distrikt Galizien'' were murdered at Bełżec. That killing center operated from March through December 1942.
