Extension text: Armed Resistance to German rule is known to have been undertaken by underground Jewish fighting organizations in at least four locations in Distrikt Krakau, Kraków, Pilica, Rzeszów, and Tarnów. In Kraków, two groups, one communist, called Iskra, and one Zionist, called Hehalutz Halohem [the fighting pioneer], came together in October 1942 to constitute the Jewish Fighting Organization, Żydowska Organicja Bojowa. It concentrated mainly on sabotage and attacks on places where German soldiers and officials congregated; its most notable action was the bombing of Café Cyganeria on 22 December 1942, in which at least a dozen Germans were killed. In Pilica and Rzeszów cells of Jewish fighters joined local Polish underground forces in sabotage operations, while in Tarnów the armed Jewish underground sought to join Polish partisan forces in the surrounding countryside. Efforts to join partisan units were the most common form of organized Jewish armed resistance in Distrikt Galizien.
